There are many acts of parliament, common law and stated cases as well as myths and legends which surround self defence. In its simplest form self defence is the act of defending yourself, someone else or your property against an aggressor.
The physical act can take many forms and have many interpretations across many disciplines of martial arts, all have their merits. What TSD do differently is step away from a single Martial Art and derive a program based on our experience of what actually works. Our team have operational competence and have tried and tested all the techniques we teach to our students.

Knowing your rights when it comes to defending yourself or physically intervening in a situation is key to being able to justify what actions you have taken in any given situation. Knowledge is power and everyone should feel empowered to defend themselves without the fear of legal proceedings post incident. To empower members of the public we have put together a series of presentations which may help our students understand the law

Control and Restraint (sometimes referred to as physical intervention) is the physical act of removing another person’s liberty by controlling their ability to have free movement using a kaleidoscope of differing techniques. This can be as simple as closing a door to prevent a person leaving a room to actually restraining the subject using physical or mechanical techniques. This is usually done in anticipation of them causing harm to another, themselves or committing a criminal act.
Traditionally this was the environment solely of the Police, Prison Service and Security Operatives. In modern times teachers, care providers, customer service teams and those working in the leisure and tourism arena engage in control and restraint on a daily bases and should therefore receive the appropriate training to keep themselves safe, physically, morally and legally.

Where there are humans there is conflict. The management of that conflict is a skill and one that has been subject of countless books and academic research but requires a great deal of judgement and patience to be effective at.
The defusing of conflict is a prerequisite to the de-escalation of many a situation that would otherwise lead to violence. Having the presence of mind to effectively reach out, communicate, negotiate and influence a person who is in the mist of anger is an undervalued skill. Taking these skills, this course is designed to enhance your natural abilities and develop them into conscious actions. Our training is delivered through scenario based teaches enhancing experiential and kinaestetic learning.

Having the physical ability to break free from an attacker is sometimes the difference between suffering life changing injuries or not.
Breakaway tactics focuses on the moment an attacker reaches out and attempts to take physical control of you. The techniques we deliver are designed so the strength of the attacker becomes irrelevant as the body mechanics play a pivotal role. This empowers anyone from 7-70 to be able to free themselves from tha grasps of a would be attacker and make good their escape.

Situation awareness is the precursor to having to defend yourself. Its listening to that voice in your head when it tells you something isn’t right, it’s understanding your gut feeling and having the courage to act upon it. It’s embracing fear and using it to its full potential.
